LEVENS KITCHEN

WHAT ARE WE BUILDING?

We are constructing a new restaurant and event space for Levens Hall.  It will open in early 2019.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

The 1590s layout and design of the current cooking and food preparation areas have been outgrown.  As a listed building, we have been very limited in what we can do to alter and improve this layout.  For your comfort and enjoyment, we felt that the best way of enhancing your experience was to start afresh with a new purpose-built restaurant.  The building project started in October 2017 and will take approximately twelve months to complete.

WHY DID WE CHOOSE THIS LOCATION?

Those of you who have visited Levens Hall before will know that the new restaurant is located on the site of the stylised 17th Century Garden.  Despite its name, this garden had only been part of the visitor experience since 1999 having previously been a drying lawn and patio area.

Various other locations were considered, including a possible site at the southern end of the car park.  However, having designed and gained planning permission for a building to be constructed here, we were forced to delay and change our plans after the House and grounds were extensively flooded during Storm Desmond in December 2015.  The new building you see today is located on the highest land available within the curtilage of Levens Hall.

HOW WILL THE NEW BUILDING BE USED?

The Levens Kitchen has been designed as a multi-purpose space for use by our visitors.  The seasonally inspired menu will use locally sourced, high-quality produce, including products grown on the Estate and in the gardens of Levens Hall.  The building has also been designed in such a way as to allow us to host a variety of events that have previously been difficult to undertake.

The Levens Kitchen will be open from February through to December, whilst the House and Gardens will continue to open from April to October.

WHAT WILL THE BUILDING LOOK LIKE?

The Levens Kitchen has been designed to reflect some of the magnificent historic features found at Levens Hall: these include sandstone mullion windows, oak trusses, lime mortar and ornate lead hoppers.  The Levens Kitchen will incorporate locally sourced materials (such as Burlington slate and Cumbrian limestone) and use local craftsmen and suppliers (such as Ulverston-based artist blacksmith Chris Brammall, stonemasons T A Law Ltd from Kirkby Stephen, and Lancaster-based builders Pinington) whilst integrating modern features (such as high windows and clean interiors) to complement and enhance the beauty of Levens Hall.

We hope you enjoy your visit.

The entire garden totals more than 12 acres. The Topiary Garden makes up one acre of the garden.
