MARY HOWARD

Mary Howard, the granddaughter of Lady Andover, was only 6 years old when Levens Hall passed to her ownership.  Mary Howard’s father was a Bagot, but her parents used the Howard family name.  An important heiress, she also inherited estates at Castle Rising, Ashtead Park and Elford.

Mary Howard had a very deep affection for Levens Hall and was a great local benefactress.  She and her husband made many changes to the house including the installation of panelling in the upstairs rooms, and the restoration of leatherwork in a sympathetic Jacobean style.  She clearly found the setting of Levens, the river flowing through the park and the backdrop of Whitbarrow inspirational, and took lessons from the well-known watercolour painter Peter de Wint.  Examples of their work are on show at Levens Hall.
