COLONEL JAMES GRAHME (1650 - 1730)

Colonel James Grahme was a close friend of the Duke of York, later King James II, and served as his Keeper of the Privy Purse and Master of the Buckhounds.  This friendship continued after the king’s abdication and exile in France.

Colonel Grahme acquired Levens Hall from his cousin, Alan Bellingham, who notoriously squandered his considerable wealth on card games.  Grahme added east and south wings to the  Elizabethan house and filled it with fine furniture and works of art.
