FACILITIES FOR THE DISABLED
Visitors with disabilities are very welcome and our staff will help with any requests, they can, during your visit.
Levens Hall was built in the 16th century and because it contains narrow door openings and many steps, access to the house is not possible for those in wheelchairs or using other mobility aids and baby buggies. For those who can walk a short distance and climb stairs there are well placed seats throughout the house. All notices and information signs are on recommended, coloured paper and type size, and there is a large print version of the text of the guide book.
The world famous gardens, the Bellingham Buttery and the Potting Shed Gift Shop are all accessible. The gardens have gravel and grass paths and a map of recommended routes is available from the ticket kiosk.
A manually operated wheelchair requiring a helper and an electric buggy are available from the ticket kiosk. The wheelchair is offered free of charge – the buggy costs £3 per hour which is paid to Kendal Shopmobility. Both may be booked in advance and availability depends on demand.
A virtual tour DVD runs continually in the accessible, Bellingham Buttery enabling those who cannot access the house to see all the rooms on show to the public. Special cutlery is available on request for visitors to the Bellingham Buttery.
There is a fully equipped disabled toilet with a low level alarm for emergencies.
DOGS
We regret that with the exception of Assistance Dogs, dogs are not permitted in the Garden, House, Bellingham Buttery, or Gift Shop.
If you are visiting Levens Hall and Gardens accompanied by your dog, you are most welcome to walk your dog, - on a lead, please - in the Park. Footpaths through the Park are accessed near the bridge over the river Kent on the opposite side of the road to the main gateway to Levens Hall. Your dog should remain in your car while you are visiting the House and Gardens.
For your dog's welfare, we advise you to park your car under one of the many large trees in the car-park which provide ample shade, and leave a window slightly open. We do provide water for dogs to drink on hot days, but the main responsibility for animal welfare remains with the owner.
